Responsible AI Development
Adili AI builds artificial intelligence systems designed around ethical principles from the outset. We do not treat ethics as a compliance step to be added at the end of development. It is a design constraint — shaping what we build, how we build it, and who we build it for.
What we build
We develop AI systems for organizations that need conversational agents, automation workflows, decision-support tools, and applied AI solutions built to serve African contexts and users. Our development work is closely connected to our chatbot practice (see AI Chatbots for African Businesses), but extends beyond it to include custom AI systems built to specification.
Our principles
Purpose before capability. We ask what problem an AI system is genuinely solving, and for whom, before asking what it is technically capable of doing. We are willing to decline projects where AI is not the appropriate solution.
Contextual grounding. AI systems built for African contexts must be shaped by the communities that will live with their consequences. We invest in understanding user context — languages, connectivity conditions, cultural expectations, existing workflows — before we design.
Consent and agency. The people whose data trains our systems, and the people affected by our systems, retain meaningful agency over how those systems are used. We build in consent mechanisms, opt-outs, and control over personal data as core features rather than legal afterthoughts.
Transparency about limitations. We are honest with clients and users about what our systems can and cannot do, where they are likely to fail, and what human oversight they require. We do not oversell.
Accountability structures. Every system we deliver includes mechanisms for redress and correction when the system causes harm — feedback channels, escalation paths, human review options, and processes for incorporating what we learn from errors.
Data protection and privacy. We build in compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act (2019), the GDPR where applicable, and best practices for data minimization, security, and user rights.
Environmental responsibility. We are attentive to the compute and energy footprint of the AI systems we build. Where a smaller, more efficient model can do the job, we use it.
How we work with clients
Every development engagement begins with a scoping conversation: what problem are you trying to solve, who does the solution need to serve, and is AI the right tool? From there, we move through design, prototyping, iterative development with user testing, and deployment support. We do not disappear after launch — most engagements include ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and refinement.
